Alabama Health Insurance – Affordable Individual, Family, And Senior Plans

Alabama health insurance plans that are affordable and cover pre-existing conditions. Easily shop and compare the best medical coverage in the Yellowhammer State from the most highly-rated companies. Low-cost medical plans are offered to individuals and families that have existing coverage, or are currently uninsured. Federal subsidies are available as Marketplace plans, and you can also purchase off-Exchange plans without government involvement or assistance.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, UnitedHealthcare,  and Ambetter offer 2024 plans throughout the state as "subsidized" or "non-subsidized." BCBS  is the largest healthcare provider in the state, and serves more than three million customers. Along with receiving high marks and several awards for customer service, plans are offered  for persons under age 65, Seniors, and Medicaid-eligible applicants.

Additional plans are offered by several other carriers (including UHC) for "short-term" or "temporary" coverage. Although policies do not contain 10 essential health benefits, premiums are very inexpensive, and policies are often approved within 24 hours. Coverage can be kept for up to 12 months, and a total of 36 months with two guaranteed renewals.

Companies that offer small group coverage include All-Savers (UnitedHealthcare), Federated Mutual, Freedom Life, and VIVA Health. Affordable medical coverage for self-employed persons is available through several carriers. Depending on the size of the business, small-group options may be offered. These types of plans feature greater flexibility of benefits and availability.

Approximately 10% of the state's population remains uninsured, although more than 200,000 persons typically purchase coverage during the Open Enrollment period.  Medicaid and CHIP provide low-cost medical coverage to qualified applicants.  Expansion of Medicaid eligibility may occur in the future, and additional off-Exchange options are slowly being introduced.

Short-Term Temporary Medical Coverage

If coverage is only needed for several months, a "short-term" plan may be the perfect solution. These types of options are ideal if you are not eligible for permanent benefits (Missed Open Enrollment deadline), and anticipate becoming eligible for comprehensive coverage within 90 days. Although prices are low, coverage is often subject to deductibles and coinsurance, and preventative benefits are not fully covered. Prescription drugs and office visits may have to be added for an extra charge.

For example, if you will become eligible for Medicare, or group benefits through your employer, and need a cheap stopgap policy, a temporary policy should be considered (along with other guaranteed-issue options).  Although most submitted claims must meet a deductible, for major medical protection, these plans should be considered. The Alabama Department of Insurance must approve all participating carriers.

Three Medicare Savings Programs

If you can't pay your Medicare premium because of lower income or resources, you may be eligible for a program that pays part of your premium, deductible and copays. Qualifications for the program include a household income below a specific level, must be a legal resident, (US citizen or living in Alabama), and be currently eligible for Pat A benefits. The three savings programs are qualifying individual, specified low-income Medicare beneficiary, and qualified Medicare beneficiary.

The "Qualifying Individual" program (QI-1) pays the Part B premium of $134 per month. However, since limited funds are available, many enrollment requests are denied. The single monthly income requirements are $1,234-$1,386. The couple monthly income requirements are $1,666-$1,872.

The "Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary" program (SLMB) is similar to the prior program, but with the following monthly income requirements: Single -- $1,032-$1,234. Couple -- $1,392-$1,666.

The "Qualified Medicare Beneficiary" program (QMB) covers the Part B premium and the Medicare deductibles ($183 for physician visits and $1,340 for hospital expenses). The Part A premium is paid under specific circumstances. The single monthly income limit is $1,032. The couple monthly income limit is $1,392.
